There's an article in today's New York Times that describes how one couple is living in New York City on a No Impact pledge for a year.
Although the article's author is sometimes baffled by their choices in typical New York Times speak, the articles is good at chronicling the difficult decisions that the couple has to face in a materialistic world. When living in a Compact, do you accept gifts? Is a birthday dinner at a restaurant ok?

Conscious Consuming Events in June 2007
Mini-Compact
Join us in June as we hold a mini-Compact. While the die-hard Compacters in California pledged not to buy anything new but food, toiletries, and gas for a year, we will experiment with the pledge during the month of June, and meet to talk about how it's been for us all on June 17th. We'll do our standard potluck format and meet from 6:00-9:00pm. Check back for event location as the date gets closer.
Sound scary? There are 3,000 folks who have signed on to the Compact yahoo group to support you with ideas and tips on your journey. To visit them on the web, go to their yahoo group.
